Clean Water, Safe Communities

Access to clean water and adequate sanitation is a fundamental human right yet millions in Kenya's Lake Victoria Region still lack it. Waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and diarrhoea remain leading killers of children under five in these communities. LAF's Environmental Hygiene and WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) programme directly addresses these gaps by promoting behaviour change, improving sanitation infrastructure, and providing hygiene education to households, schools, and health facilities.

Our approach is rooted in the community training local hygiene promoters, constructing affordable latrines and hand-washing stations, and linking communities with county water and sanitation authorities to ensure long-term sustainability.

How We Work

Implementation Approach

We use community-led total sanitation (CLTS) methods that spark self-motivated behaviour change rather than top-down instruction.

Community-Led Sanitation

Using CLTS methodology, we ignite community disgust about open defecation and motivate collective action to build and use sanitation facilities.

School-Based WASH

Partnering with school management committees to ensure safe water, gender-segregated toilets, and menstrual hygiene facilities in all target schools.

Government Linkage

Coordinating with county public health offices and water utilities to leverage resources and ensure sustainable water and sanitation services.

Target Audience

Who We Serve

Our WASH interventions focus on the most hygiene-vulnerable households and institutions in the Lake Victoria Region.

  • Geographic Focus: Homabay town, Karachuonyo, Kasipul Kabondo, Rangwe, Suba North and South.
  • Primary Schools: Children aged 5–17 in schools lacking adequate sanitation facilities.
  • Rural Households: Families in informal settlements and rural semi-urban areas with no access to clean water.

We conduct community needs assessments, prioritising areas with highest disease burden, lowest access to clean water, and greatest number of vulnerable households (children, elderly, and people with disabilities).
